Gay Pride (London) 2017: Canon 5D : 85mm : 1/5000 sec : f1.8
Sometimes when we are focussed so intently on composition, the subject matter or achieving a technically competent shot, we overlook the potential of colour to dramatise our shot. Gay Pride is a riot of colour with oodles of opportunities to create powerful portraits.
In this particular shot, the power of red was utilised to the max. With a convenient dark background accentuating the shape and colour of the subject’s clothes the full effect of red was allowed to dominate the image. Also, red has a series of social meanings that can add depth to a shot. The sexuality and power communicated here were not only highly relevant but added a sense of intrigue to the subject who remained hidden behind their mask.
